Enrolling in Baruch College’s Industrial/Organizational Psychology Program was truly an amazing and life changing experience for me. The program allowed me to take courses that piqued my interest and obtain a better understanding of various aspects of the workplace ranging from selection, organizational culture and organizational leadership. During my time in the program, I was able to take a Personnel Psychology course where I conducted a full detailed job analysis and learned the importance of selection and recruiting in the workplace.

In conjunction with taking courses in the I/O Psychology program,  I also served as the Graduate Assistant for the Director of Weissman Graduate Career Services for two and half years. Little did I know, the detailed and distinguished educational exposure that I received in the classroom and the professional development I received in working for Weissman Graduate Career Services, helped me discover my passion and calling for working with graduate students in a career service capacity. During my time as a Graduate Assistant, I worked one-on-one with students supporting their career development with resume and cover letter writing, mock interviews, as well as planning and organizing career fairs.

My Master’s degree and career development experience that I received at Baruch College has helped me obtain my current position as a Career Placement Officer in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department at Columbia University.  The faculty, staff and fellow graduate students that I met during my time at Baruch have all become an indispensable part of my life and a vital key in my personal and professional growth.

The MA Arts Administration program offered a buffet of courses from Financial Decision Making to Theatre Producing Cycle to Nonprofit Management that gave me the assortment of skills needed to succeed in the arts and culture sector as a leader.

Completing the program with student-colleagues with a myriad of work backgrounds led to insights across genres.  Fine arts specialists shared their experience from galleries and museums explaining trends from their field, and colleagues with performing arts backgrounds shared their experience in live events and trends in their field. My education was fortified by this exchange.  These conversations were engaging and often led to breakthrough ideas about how different sectors of the arts could benefit from one another. 

A real asset of this program is that many teachers prioritized guest lecturers. Being located in a city that is overflowing with art, art-makers, and industry experts the program had a monumental responsibility to tap into that swell - and the program did.  The faculty and the students were widely and deeply connected in the industry and offered many opportunities for real, first-hand exposure to organization leadership, data, case studies, and in-person experiences. We often had site-visits (The Public Theatre, The Pekoe Group, The Metropolitan Opera...) that gave us inside perspectives on these organizations.

I learned about my new position from a colleague while chatting at an opening night party.  He asked if he could suggest me as a candidate, and the college contacted me shortly thereafter.

As a cohort model, I received personal attention from every professor at Baruch.  I was exposed to various modalities and methods utilized in the counseling profession.  I was encouraged to find my own therapeutic "voice" while being trained as an integrative mental health professional. 

This personalized attention has allowed me to graduate at the top of the masters-level mental health field.  I was highly competitive in the NYC environment of ivy-league counseling and social work programs.  Baruch requires direct client contact in the first year with a 100-hour practicum.  This exposure to substance abuse counseling in my first year has been essential to my immediate employment post-graduation.  

I found my current position through internet career hunting sites (e.g., indeed, Glassdoor and idealist).  I am a Licensed Substance Abuse Clinician at the Addiction Institute of New York, which is part of the Mount Sinai Healthcare System.  I facilitate individual and group sessions on the issues surrounding substance use and mental health in a harm reduction model.  I also supervise mental health counseling interns for their 600-hour second year internship.

Enrolling in Baruch’s I/O Psychology program was a great opportunity for me to further explore the field of psychology. I was most appreciative of my professors and peers who were passionate and serious about the field. While a student, I had a lot of exposure to I/O Psychology that helped me understand the needs of organizations and their employees. My current job-team practices the theories and practical methods that I learned from the program.

When I was a current graduate student, I had an opportunity to intern with the MTA Long Island Rail Road for the majority of the time I was enrolled. As an Intern, I was very involved in projects and received hands-on training.

I am now the HR Coordinator – Sourcing and Screening, with the MTA Metro-North Railroad. My primary job responsibility is to be fully involved in the recruitment process – from analyzing a job and it’s description, to pre-screening candidates, reviewing resumes and candidate qualifications, constructing interview questions and methods to identify candidates, facilitating interviews with hiring managers, running background checks, making job offers, hosting New Hire Orientations, attending job fairs and events, and special projects designated by department head.

I believe that Baruch's MHC program helped me significantly grow as a clinician and a person. Through team-work and introspection, I was able to utilize the program to gain insight into my own barriers, while learning a plethora of techniques and theories in my quest to become a competent therapist. Through my professors' guidance and the help of the cohort, I was able to work on overcoming obstacles and became more accepting of myself.  I can't think of a more significant gift in terms of my academic and personal life. 

Academically, the MHC program was not only valuable in regards to what I learned while I was a student, but it opened avenues in terms of future study and exploration, thus contributing to and cementing my current clinical framework (CBT and Existential Psychotherapy, with a mix of psychoanalysis).

I am currently employed as a Psychotherapist at Good Health Psychiatric Services, P.C.  I learned about my current position through social networking.  Without the MHC program, I can't imagine myself being as competent and skilled as I am, and I'll never forget the role that this program played in affording me the skills and the courage needed to be successful in such an emotionally demanding field.

Baruch College's Mental Health Counseling Program provided me with one of the most rewarding life experiences. The concept of creating a cohort program was brilliant because my cohort served as my family and support system throughout and after the program. My internship experience while in the program allowed me to discover my passion for working with children and adolescents.

I currently work for The Children's Aid Society at P.S./I.S. 50, as a Mental Health Counselor.  While considering internship possibilities, my professors encouraged us to challenge ourselves by working with a population that we considered difficult for us. I accepted the challenge and as a result found my true passion. I gained a new family in my cohort, a strong network in my professors, educational, experiential and personal growth.

The Industrial/Organizational Psychology program has provided me with the skills I needed to start my career. I loved that the professors all had experience in the field, and that the courses were relevant to the needs of future employers.

While I already had a job in the talent acquisition field, I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in organizational development. Knowing that there were successful Baruch alumni in the field, I reached out to Elyse Mendel in Career Services. She put me in touch with an alumna who was an Organizational Development Specialist with the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC). After meeting for coffee and learning more about the position, I was immediately interested and forwarded my resume for future openings. A few months later, I received a call from HHC about an available position as an Organizational Development Specialist. I was scheduled for interview, and ended up getting the position!

Throughout college and graduate school, I was always told that networking was the best way to find your next career, and it definitely paid off. I think Baruch has a great network of alumni and current students, and the best way to find your next career opportunity is to stay in touch.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MFE) program, and feel that the value of the program goes well beyond the cost of tuition. The quality of the faculty and students combined with the devotion of the program director and a strong alumni network has led to the success of this excellent program.

The MFE provided the necessary technical skills needed for my career.  And while in the program, I met numerous practitioners and alumni working in the industry, all of whom were valuable connections.

I obtained my first job thanks to the alumni network and career services.  After spending some time as a Market Risk Manager at Morgan Stanley, I transferred into my current position as a Quantitative Market Risk Associate.

I have learned so much throughout my two years in the Industrial/Organizational Psychology program, and not just from textbooks.  Speaking with professors who have been in the field for years gave me invaluable career advice and guidance.  In addition, the professional staff from WSAS Graduate Career Services and the Graduate Programs Office always went above and beyond to help.  I was able to tailor my resume, practice interviews, and gain networking opportunities within the program.  It allowed me to find multiple internship opportunities which ultimately led to my current full-time position.

I obtained the internship with Y&R as the Global HR Apprentice through the Weissman career job board.  After gaining experience in the area of learning and development, and contributing to their global learning strategy, I was able to convert to a full-time position as the Regional HR Associate based in Singapore.

I think the MFE program at Baruch College is an excellent program which trains students for real-life work.  Team work is encouraged and the curriculum is the best.  I had a PhD degree in Economics and the MFE gave me the skills to switch my modeling career in retail credit risk to investment risk, counterparty risk and wholesale risk.  The great recruiting assistance provided by the staff and alumni is a plus. I learned about my current position at BNYM through one of my Professors.

The I/O Psychology program at Baruch College’s Weissman School of Arts and Sciences is one of the best programs in NYC. The program has impacted me in many ways- academically, professionally and personally.  I learned from some of the best, experienced, professors in the field of I/O Psychology, was given great professional help and advice from professors and career services, participated in many networking opportunities, and made lifelong friends.

I was able to learn about concepts and trends in I/O psychology in the classroom as well as apply them in the workforce.  I landed many internships as well as my current fulltime job through utilizing Weissman Graduate Career Services.  I am now working as a Tests & Measurement Specialist with the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS).

I began graduate school at Baruch after obtaining my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Business from Queens College. After only one introductory course, I knew I was interested in pursuing a career path in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

Choosing the I/O Psychology program gave me a great opportunity to learn from professors who were successful in the field and were passionate and knowledgeable about the subjects they taught. At Baruch, I was exposed to many different aspects of the I/O field. Although I enjoyed the Statistics and Personnel Selection and Testing aspects, I had the chance to take classes in Interpersonal Skills in the Workplace and Leadership Development as well. Through my courses, I found that I was interested in Personnel Testing and obtained an internship in the field.

During my first semester at Baruch, I learned about the internship program at MTA New York City Transit from Baruch’s WSAS Graduate Career Services. That summer, I started as an Intern, and was able to work part-time and apply the theories and methods that I learned from my courses to real-world situations.

I am currently an Analyst in the Personnel Testing, Selection and Classification Unit at MTA New York City Transit where I utilize I/O concepts to select employees in a largely civil service environment.

The most impressive aspect of the M.A. in Corporate Communication program is the faculty. They integrated theory and practical approaches that I was able to apply to real world situations immediately. Corporate Communication trends have changed quickly, and one of the most important communication tools these days was my favorite topic in school - social media.

I landed a job in this field right after I graduated. I have to say thank you to Baruch’s strong alumni network. We have the Baruch Corporate Communication Graduate Student Association (BCCGSA) that works closely with Weissman Graduate Career Services to connect current students and alumni. While I was BCCGSA President, I had opportunities to connect with alumni and employers who work in the field.

I learned about my current position from one of my fellow classmates. I had valuable experiences from both in-class and after-class activities, which enhanced the value of my education, while a graduate student in the MA Corporate Communication program.

Baruch College’s Master of Financial Engineering program is located in the financial center of Manhattan.  The superstar professors not only taught hands-on practical courses like Volatility Surface and SABR model, but they also helped students after graduation.  You will not find another program of this caliber.

The program allowed us to focus on the courses and financial-engineering technical problems without any distractions.  The Alumni and Program Director shared jobs and their connections with you, so you did not need to spend time searching online for job openings.  This provided more time for students to study, and that was excellent!

After working in the communications field for a number of years, I was looking to gain a deeper understanding of my role as a communications professional. The M.A. in Corporate Communication program provided me with the knowledge and skills to advance my career, and helped me understand how professional communicators can and should guide an organization's overall strategy. There is no question that my graduate studies at Baruch helped me advance within the federal government.

I began the M.A. program while serving as a press officer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As I was entering my final semester at Baruch, I was offered a position with the U.S. Department of Justice, where I now coordinate communications for all immigration courts in the northeast.

The professors were engaging, smart, and compassionate.  I learned a great deal about the art of communication and how to take it seriously.  We reviewed many case studies and scenarios about major corporations and their communication policies and campaigns.  I also appreciated that I was able to complete the program at my own pace; I had time to work on a variety of topics and subjects that I was excited about.  I did my thesis on Online Dating Racism, and enjoyed courses in Corporation and Cinema, Work Life Balance, and International Communication.  I also improved on how to follow directions, work with other students, and be more humble! 

I saw an internship on Idealist.org with UNICEF for their Youth Team.  It was for a project focusing on connecting climate activists and allowing them to speak together through a portal.  I also realized that UNICEF had a slight gap with their social media, so I created a niche for myself in that arena, which resulted in a consultancy.  That was seven years ago, and I'm still with UNICEF but now in Nairobi, Africa.

The Baruch College - Mental Health Counseling program incorporates an experiential model which helped me gain real world counseling skills including mock counseling sessions, and multicultural/ diversity training. Whether in a theories class or a group dynamics class, the program helped prepare me tremendously for my internships as well as in my current position where I work mostly with women of color.

My internship was with a domestic violence agency and the supervision I received at Baruch College while interning allowed me to reflect on my experience. In our group supervision internship class my peers challenged me to think of my clients from new perspectives. My internship also taught me about the manifestations and impact of trauma on someone’s life. This has shaped the way I approach clients as a Young Professionals Program Coordinator.

After working for several years in the journalism industry, I decided to advance my career by enrolling at the City University of New York - Baruch College. The M.A. in Corporate Communication program broadened my perspective.  I learned about both internal and external communications― from theoretical and practical approaches that were eloquently delivered through lectures and simulations.  I also found the presentations, individual and group projects very useful and applicable.    

Upon completion of the program, I landed an internship at United Nations Headquarters, New York.  I currently work as a Public Information Intern in the Department of Public Information, where I write articles, press releases and feature stories related to global issues and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  I also draft speeches, create and develop weekly social media content, and draft, format, edit and post original web site content/news stories.

The MA in Arts Administration program provided me the opportunity to broaden my professional network both laterally and vertically.  I was able to meet professionals that I heard about including Gina Gibney, of the Gibney Dance Company, staff members at BAM, as well as classmates who had a wealth of experiences in different areas of the arts. 

The ability to customize the electives also helped me understand the professional world within and outside of artistic environments.  Taking courses from all 3 graduate schools was beneficial.  I got to dip into various areas of HR with Professor Ryan Smith of the Marxe School, while in the Weissman School, I learned about marketing with Professor Amanda Pekoe. 

I will begin a position as a Marketing Intern, with the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), which I learned about through the Art Ambassadors Program from the Baruch Performing Arts Center.
